Amsterdam

In January 2026 we went away for a long weekend in Amsterdam - my present to Pat for her 70th Birthday the previous month.

We stayed at The Hendrick's Hotel, Prins Hendrikkade 139.

One of the best places we visited was Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic Museum). Despite the Reformation in Europe, Amsterdam remained Catholic for many decades but eventually turned Protestant when taken over by William of Orange. However, there was much tolerance shown about the competing belief systems. Catholics didn't endure great persecution and, although banned in public, were allowed to carry on their religious practices in private. Various houses then converted rooms to act as Catholic churches. One such house is now the "Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic Museum)"
